Guilford Education Alliance

What are the issues?

Richard Moore, President of the Weaver Foundation and member of the Guilford Education Alliance summarizes the issues, "If we don't invest in [students] and prepare them to get the highest and best level of jobs, then it doesn't bode well for us economically or for the future of the community."

What are they doing?

In 2002, business leaders joined to form the Guilford Education Alliance, an independent, countywide organization devoted to strengthening schools and positively impacting learning for all Guilford County residents.

See GuilfordEducationAlliance.org.

How does this make a difference?

The Alliance supports the following initiatives:

  • FOCUS Guilford: This project unites families and the community to support high academic achievement by recognizing each as learning partners.
  • Teacher Supply Warehouse: Local companies donate unused supplies to a warehouse, where teachers can access them easily and use them in their classrooms. See the Teacher Supply Warehouse page.

Other current initiatives include:

  • Community Computer Labs Partnership Project: Students in after-school programs use computers for additional help with their homework.

  • Community Forums: Forums are held around the community during the year for parents, students, and community leaders can discuss educational issues, such as student discipline, budget proposals, and calendar years.

  • Donors Choose: Teachers describe potential classroom projects that warrant funding and businesses or parents donate to that specific project.

  • Education Leaders Institute: Parents and community leaders attend workshop sessions to learn how to participate in and promote the high quality school system.
  • New Teachers Reception: After the beginning of the year, teaches who are new to the Guilford County School system are invited to a reception so they can meet local businesses and organizations.
  • Principal for a Day: Community leaders or parents choose to fill the shoes of a principal for a day.
