2002 University Award Recipients:

Former Governor James B. Hunt

Photo: Former NC Gov. Jim HuntJim Hunt served as North Carolina's governor for four terms (1977-85; 1993-2001), the longest that any governor has been elected in North Carolina. He is a nationally recognized leader in education, and his Smart Start program is a nonprofit, public-private partnership providing quality child care, health care and family support for children who need it. Former Governor Hunt has devoted much of the last fifteen years of his life to excellence in teaching in the United States. In 1985 he co-chaired with David Hamburg the "Committee of 50" which led to the Carnegie Forum on Education and the Economy and eventually, to the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. Former Governor Hunt also serves as the chairman of the National Commission on Teaching and America's Future at Stanford University. He also serves on the Board of Trustees of the Carnegie Corporation of New York.

Former Governor Hunt has served as chairman of the National Education Goals Panel and vice chairman of the board of Achieve, Inc. His work has been recognized with numerous national awards, including the James B. Conant Award, the Harold W. McGraw, Jr. Prize in Education, and the Children's Defense Fund Award. He holds B.A. and M.S. degrees from North Carolina State University and a J.D. degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Justice Henry Frye

Photo: Justice Frye, former Chief Justice on the North Carolina Supreme CourtJustice Frye served as Chief Justice on the North Carolina Supreme Court from 1999-2001. Before his term as Chief Justice, he served as associate justice in the NC Supreme Court from 1983-1999. He was not only the first African American justice to serve as Chief Justice; he was also the first African American on the state Supreme Court. In 1968, he became the first African American elected to the North Carolina House of Representatives this century. He served in the North Carolina State House until 1980 when he was elected to the NC Senate, serving until 1982. He has been a member of the Board of Directors for both NC Mutual Life Insurance Company and Greensboro National Bank, and he is part of the NC Bar Association and the National Bar Association.

He has received several honors, including the Lawyer of the Year from the NC Association of Black Lawyers, the Appellate Judges Award and the Greensboro Business Leaders Hall of Fame. He holds a B.S. from North Carolina A & T State University, and a J.D. with honors from UNC-Chapel Hill School of Law.
