Julia and Hugh Morton

Hugh Morton is best known as the owner of Grandfather Mountain. A professional photographer and World War II veteran, Morton has championed campaigns to protect the mountain landscape and the environment. One of his most notable campaigns was the fight to save Cape Hatteras Lighthouse from the erosion that had begun to threaten its existence. Morton has also made significant contributions to Wilmington, including a 100-acre park that he and his grandfather donated to New Hanover County.

He has received numerous awards and honorary degrees, namely the North Carolina Award for Public Service, the William R. Davie award from UNC-Chapel Hill, the North Caroliniana Society Award, the Citation for Distinguished Public Service and the Governor's Award. His wife Julia, who serves on UNC's Board of Governors, has been vice chairwoman from 1980-84. John Jordan, Jr. has been a member of the Board of Governors since 1972. A founding member and senior partner in the law firm of Jordan, Price, Wall, Gray & Jones in Raleigh, Jordan is still active in the Fourth Circuit Judicial Conference. Jordan served as a senator in the NC General Assembly from 1959-64 and continues to serve as an active member of the Democratic Party. In addition to his many governmental appointments, Jordan has served on several health and medical boards, including the American Cancer Society, Governor's Cancer Commission, American Red Cross for North Carolina, Chowan College board and the North Carolina Medical Foundation. Jordan has received numerous awards, including the Distinguished Service Award as Raleigh's "Young Man of the Year" in 1955, Tar Heel of the Week in 1955, Distinguished Service Award of the North Carolina Public Health Association for the Promotion of Health Legislation in North Carolina, and the American Cancer Society Gold Medal Award.
