Former UNC President Molly Broad and her husband, Bob Broad, received the 2006 University Award. UNC President Erskine Bowles and awards committee chairman Brent Barringer presented the award to Mr. And Mrs. Broad at a banquet in their honor.
This year’s award acknowledged the leadership of Mrs. Broad, who retired in December 2005 after more than eight years as the University system's leader, as well as the contributions of her husband during this period.
As president, Molly Broad led the UNC system through unprecedented growth, the creation of a need-based financial aid program, and an increase in North Carolina's college attendance rate. In 2000, Mrs. Broad helped spearhead the passage of the $3.1 billion bond issue for construction and renovation of campuses across the state.
