Voices of Freedom Contest
Calling all journalists! Welcome to the first Liberty Press
Contest, where selected entries will appear in the new online Liberty
Press newspaper. Children in grades 3-5 can write a news
story, a feature story or an editorial about an
event or issue in their community that involves a right or freedom.
Here are some examples:
- A news story about a protest around free speech or another right
- A news story about an event in your school celebrating freedom or
rights of some kind
- A news story about a petition (list of names) that may be circulating
in your school or community and what issue the petition is about
- A feature story about a person or group that has fought for someone's
rights
- A feature story about a person who was the object of prejudice before
and now has more rights (e.g., handicapped person, a person in a minority
group, a religious group)
- An editorial about what freedom means in the 21st century
- An editorial about how people in your community appreciate their rights
(to vote, go to church, etc.) OR take them for granted
Topics do not need to match exactly with the suggestions
above but need to involve the topic of freedom or human rights AND
need to be in one of the categories below.
Definitions:
News story: says exactly
what happened and is what we usually see on the front page of the
newspaper or hear in the first portion of a radio/TV broadcast.
Many people think of the news story as a triangle, with the most
important information at the top. News stories are usually on the
front page of the newspaper.
Feature Story: presents
the topic from a particular point of view of the people involved
and is more like storytelling.
Editorial: gives an opinion
about an issue. The editorial section in the newspaper is usually
toward the end of the first section.
Eligibility
The Liberty Press Contest is open to children
in grades 3-5. Entries will be judged separately for each grade.
Children of employees of UNC-TV are not eligible.
