First Prize Winner:

Entrants must be in grades 3-5. One entry per person or per class will be accepted. Stories can be a news story, feature story, or editorial and must be about the topic of freedom.

Word Count

  • Third grade stories must contain 100-200 words.
  • Fourth and fifth grade stories must contain 100-350 words.
  • The word county includes "a," "an," & "the," but not the title.

Story Text

  • Text must be printed legibly (or typed).
  • Text may be integrated into the illustration pages or on individual pages.
  • Non English text must be translated on the same page and the translation text must adhere to word count.

Format & Illustrations

  • Stories that are more than one page must be numbered in the lower right-hand corner of each page.
  • Stories must have at least 2 scanned photographs or drawings.
  • Editorials can include an editorial cartoon.

Entry Form

Each entry must include an official Liberty Press Contest Entry Form with the required signature of a parent/guardian (and, if appropriate, the signature of the sponsoring teacher), confirming that the story is original and granting permission to use the story for promotional purposes.
