James Holshouser

Born October 8, 1934 in Watauga County, James (Jim) Holshouser graduated from Davidson College and obtained his law degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He served in the State House of Representatives in 1963, from 1965-1966, and in 1969 and 1971. During those terms, he served as House Minority Leader and Chairman of Republican State Executive Committee, 1966-1972. In 1968, he was the state campaign manager for Richard Nixon's bid for US President. In 1973, he took office as Governor of North Carolina, becoming the first Republican governor since 1896. As governor, he conducted the state's financial matters with sound business principles. To promote economy and improve services, he established an Efficient Study Commission. He submitted proposals to increase foreign trade and develop a modern transportation system, including a mass transit system; and he pursued open communications and more involvement with the press and minority groups. In addition, he proposed educational and state parks improvements.
